THE TOWER

Windmillsmall

In the Millennium Year one of us went to the top with a camera and took a series of pictures around 360%. From up there you can see that England is still a green and pleasant land. You can also see that The Weald was properly named for the German WALD or Forest. Whichever way you look there are masses of trees.

This picture looks East/South/East over the Crane Brook to The Union Mill, Cranbrook’s other big feature. In this direction you get into open country quite quickly. Just to the right of the windmill sails you will see three tall poplar trees. There is not much building beyond them.

Our HOME page tells you that our church tower is being repaired, so nobody gets to see the views from the top today, except for the stone masons. It was not like that a year ago, for we managed to make  andaccess to the tower safe for visitors and we opened it on Saturdays.

When you look at the tower today you see scaffolding and curtains and a board saying BodiamUNIVERSAL STONE. Who are they? look at their web site and you will see multiple pictures of prestigious structures they have worked on. We are in safe hands. They have also worked close to us geographically. You will recognise the picture. They did not build it, of course: just mended parts!

  1. During a recent visit to the quarry at East Grinstead that supplies Universal Stone with the stone for the tower ,colleagues were surprised to find that, apart from the manager ,all the workers were Polish. Signs were in Polish [presumably health and safety ?]
Apparently there were very few British applicants and those that did start soon left .
What does this say about our job applicants /school leavers ?
Should we recognise Polish workers when the tower is complete ?
    If so how ?

  2. Thank you very much, Brian. John Tapper makes the same fact in his article in the parish magazine. The news about British workers is truly frightening. There is much satisfaction to be gained by completing arduous work well. Something is being missed.
