SOUTHDOORHere are some images.  First of all is the south door and the path leading up to it. During daylight hours it stands open. There is a much bigger door at the west end, but this is the one used most of the time. Above it is a small room called a Parvise, not found in many churches. Such rooms had varied uses, and our was once used as a prison. It is reached by some precarious stairs and now serves as storage space. The stairs are right beside our one unique feature which is a total immersion font. It was installed by a past vicar to compete with a non-conformist church that favoured the practice. It was seldom used.

TURRETHIGHJALT

Way up above you as you as you stand before the door, and to your left, is the tower and the splendid weather vane standing up on the turret. Like most churches our was designed to focus attention on the high altar at the east end. In our picture you can’t see the chancel, which is beyond the big stone arch. It is spacious and used to seat a large choir. Today, the clergy mostly stand this side of the arch. The chancel is used for  group activities. The communion rail is the near aide of the chancel,

BASBESTGREENMANAt the other end from the high altar is another arch, and on it are two distinctive features. One is the coat of arms given by Sir Thomas Basden. The other is a wooden boss showing the Green Man fertility symbol. He is a relic of pre-christian times and found in very many European churches.

OFT

Few churches have an Old Father Time like ours. He is the latest of DUNPORIMseveral. Here he stands on the ground before being lifted into position over the clock. The right hand image is the St.Dunstan’s banner created by the children of Cranbrook primary School, with a bit of help from teachers and parents. It hangs on the north wall.

BASDEN

Looking upwards and backwards from the north aisle you can see the ringing chamber where the bell-ringers perform. On the arch below you can see the location of the Basden Arms and the Green Man.

Some features are of more recent origin. At the entrance to St. Thomas’s Chapel is PRAYERPOSTa prayer circle that owes much to Philip Crocker. It is used for individual and small group prayer and by visitors. Prayer requests can be left there to be prayed for by the resident prayer ministry team. There are photographs of the team members on the wall above the cross but this photograph did not come out too well. A replacement is coming!
